The Great River Sangha was formed in 1994 by a group of Buddhists and interested people who wanted to create a support structure for those desiring to learn and practice Buddhism in the tri-state area (Illinois, Missouri and Iowa).
The group remains unaffiliated, with no individual teacher. Our membership comes from diverse religious traditions. We encourage any interested persons from any tradition or complete beginners to join us. There are no conditions to be met to become a member. Membership is complete when the person agrees to be on the membership list. We are a fun-loving group of interesting and creative people. Our ranks come from all walks of life, includng artists, musicians, scientists, educators, and the blessedly retired.
We meet every Sunday morning for meditation from 9:00 to 10:30 A.M. in the back room at the Jade Orchid, 605 Hampshire, Quincy, Illinois. Instruction is generally available for beginners. Participants may engage in any meditation practice of their choosing. We usually have coffee, a snack and a few laughs after the Sunday meditation period.
We also meet every other Wednesday night for book discussion from 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. The location varies, often meeting at the home of a member. A list of books we have recently read shows something of our breadth of interest. In addition, we hold monthly half-day retreats at a quiet, rural locale near Monroe City, Missouri.
In an effort to show something of the character of our members, we present here some of their creative works.
